In my mind there are three main categories for fonts. Serif and San serif and Scripty/ Display fonts..
Serif fonts have "feet" on the end of strokes.
San Serif fonts are clean cut at the end of strokes.
Scripty / Display fonts have a calligraphic flow.

Good Examples of Serif fonts are:
Times New Roman
Baskerville
Bodoni
Caslon

Good Examples of San Serif fonts are:
Arial
Helvetica
Futura
Univers

Good Examples of Scripty Display fonts are:
Edwardian
Scriptina
Old fashion Script
Aristocrat
In creating a layout try using a combination of Serif and San Serif fonts
to create contrast and hierarchiey. Use Scripty display fonts for attracting attention to the layout possibly in a headline or drop cap.
